In August 1958 a bulldozer operator named Jerry Crew carried a sixteen-inch plaster footprint out of the woods above Bluff Creek, California. The newspaper photograph of him holding it put a new word into national print, and it stayed there.

But the creature was never only American. The Abkhaz villagers who remembered Zana. A Sherpa guide on the Menlung glacier. A mining-camp hunter on the Rio Jamanxim, soldiers in the Vietnamese highlands, a Florida woman who mailed two photographs to the sheriff. Different languages, same shape at the tree line.
